Consciousness raising

1980

Barbara said “One of the chief tenets of women’s liberation was groups, which transformed things, as women who had been isolated with different men, were coming together in groups, and this enabled women to share their experiences, and realise these were shared with a lot of other women out there, which was a very empowering process. In order to get women to that stage you had to get women past the (feminist) stereotype which in some ways we did reinforce. It was undermining a lot of the values we’d grown up with in the fifties and sixties”.
