mid 1960s, suits
1965
“Butch-femme was still alive and well in the
mid-sixties. Sybil was a classic butch who always dressed in a suit,
shirt and tie and so did most of them. This was how you went out on a
Saturday night, and their feminine partners were really quite girly. In
fact, today, the feminine partners are more butch than they were in the
sixties. Up till the ‘70s there were no casual jeans, so, to be dressed
up you had to go the suit way or the dress way. Suits and shirts and
ties - it wasn’t looked on strangely because you’d only go to places
where you knew you would be accepted.”
