Five Days of Fun
August 1983
Five Days of Fun, also known as 'Gay Brum'. The annual event took place for five days over the August Bank Holiday, the first taking place in 1983. Teams from different community and commercial ventures took part in 'It's a knockout' type games. The games took place in the garden of the Grosvenor House Hotel and later in the car park of Albany House, behind the then Partners bar (currently Glamourous Showbar).
The event ran until the mid 90s when it was superseded by Birmingham Pride. Instrumental in the events success was the unprecedented collaboration between the commercial venues in the city which ensured that events did not compete with each other. A prime mover in setting up the event was Brian Wigley who was then entertainments manager at the Nightingale and later left to open Partners bar with John Jeffries.
The original It's a knockout event took place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in mid 1970s.
