Boot Women
March 1993
'Boot Women' organise walks, other activities and social events for lesbians and have been one of the most successful and significant community led groups for lesbians in Birmingham for the last 15 years.
The first Boot Women walk took place on the first Sunday in March 1993, and has continued every month since, (walks are now the second Sunday). The formula of meeting on the bridge at the MAC (Midlands Arts Centre) continues.
The idea came from discussions by a group of women who continued to meet upstairs at the Old Mo on a Tuesday night, long after its lesbian hey day was over.
Many of the original women still go on the walks although the leadership has been passed to a new generation of women.
As well as the monthly walks, the Boot Women group also organise rounders during the summer months and have organised ongoing or ad hoc socials and fund-raisers.
They have both written and e-mail distribution for their newsletter with over 300 women on their mailing lists.
