Precursors to civil partnership
Prior to the introduction of civil partnerships in 2005, some same-sex couples had chosen to have some sort of commitment ceremony, with or without a religious element included.
Couples resident in London were able to sign the London Partnership
Register from 5 September 2001. This had been introduced by Ken Livingston, Mayor of London. The debate and passing of the Civil Partnership Act 2004 meant that Birmingham did not have to decide whether to follow suit and introduce a Partnership Register for the second city.
