Patrick Edwards aka Black Pat or Bula
June 1962 to October 2006
Patrick Edwards or Black Pat aka Bula was one of the most well known and liked characters on the Birmingham gay scene. Of Afro-Caribbean descent, Pat was raised in Handsworth.
Black Pat had a long association with the Nightingale Club where he was the hostess at Thorp Street. He later went on to promote Straight Lesbian And Gay SLAG nights at the Steering Wheel, from 1994, as well as other gay nights in the city.
Pat was known for his innovative and flamboyant appearance, often commissioning his own clothes and costumes. He was influential in changing ideas about appearance, as well as bringing the heterosexual and gay club scenes together.
Pat devoted his time to the club scene but also raised money for local causes such as ABplus.
He was also a performance poet. He sadly passed away in 2006.
