April 1997
Midlands Zone magazine is the UK’s largest regional gay publication and is
celebrating its eleventh birthday in 2008. Its editor, Martin Monahan, was already
publishing Midlands What’s On magazine at the time that Midlands Zone was launched as a new monthly publication in April 1997.
Over the years,
Zone has undergone numerous design changes, and through its news pages has
reflected the way in which life has changed for the gay community, particularly
in the Midlands, over the last decade. As well as covering major news stories,
Zone also includes Film, Theatre, Music, CDs, TV, Books, Health and Lifestyle
sections, and features photo galleries from gay venues throughout the region, as
well as a Readers' Letters page. Zone writer Gudrun Limbrick offers a lesbian
slant on life in her regular column, while well-known gay comedian and writer
Mike Parker was also a monthly contributor for many years, using his always
witty and incisive column to map the various political and social changes which
have impacted on the gay community down the years.
