Lesbian Rights
December 1969
During the emergence of both feminist politics and gay politics in the late sixties and seventies, many lesbians chose to fight for their rights within the context of the Women's Liberation Movement , rather than gay liberation, believing that they had a stronger bond with the shared oppression of heterosexual women, than with gay men. By the late seventies and early eighties lesbians were themselves organising separately from their feminist counterparts.
The HIV/AIDS crisis in the 80s, during which many lesbians showed their support both individually and collectively for gay men, followed closely by Clause 28 from 1988, did much to bring lesbians and gay men together in common cause..
