Farmers Bridge Locks
February 1974 to February 2002
Stretching from The National Indoor Arena to to St Chads Cathedral, the 13 Farmers Bridge Locks provided until recently a quite, undisturbed subterranean world popular as a Cruising ground for gay men. In the 1980s and before the lock flight was a semi derelict world of abandoned warehouses and derelict factories.
The impressive regeneration of the canals, coupled with measure to discourage gay men such as bright lighting of tunnels, have ensured that the area is no longer the hive of activity it once was. Although illegal for many men this was the only way of meeting other gay men, for many the area provided am alternative social life to the commercial bars and clubs.
