Early London Prides
July 1980
Long before Birmingham held its first Pride event, many midlanders travelled to the London Pride marches. Unlike today's carnival celebrations of gay life and culture, these marches were highly politicised and very heavily policed. They represented the rising strength and aspirations of the gay rights movement and often attracted several hundred thousand whistle blowing and chanting marchers.
