1961 saw the release of an important British film on a gay theme, pleading for tolerance towards homosexuals and an end to the blackmail of gay men. Victim stars Dirk Bogarde as a successful barrister who falls victim to blackmailers threatening to expose his homosexuality. The film was shown widely across the UK but was initially banned in America for an actor's use of the word 'homosexual'.
