Telecom Tower
February 1966 to February 2000
Birmingham's tallest structure, the Telecom Tower (formerly GPO Tower), Constructed between 1963 and 1966, its cavernous foundations were a popular haunt for gay men as early as the 1970s. Sitting on top of the Farmers Bridge Locks, which until recently were also a popular Cruising ground for gay men.
The dead spaces beneath the former telephone exchange Brindley House, which straddle the lock flight and sits adjacent to the tower, were blocked off in the mid 1990s to combat what was seen as anti social behaviour, coupled with the rise of Internet dating this has lead to a massive decline in this areas use amongst gay men as a cruising area.
