Black gay men from Birmingham were amongst the 70 who attended the first National Black Gay Men's conference organised by the Black Lesbian and Gay Centre, London on October 31st 1987. London, Manchester, Leeds, Leicester and Bristol were also represented.
The day held at Hampden Community Centre N1 included performances by African-American singer, Blackberrie and a host of workshops exploring Health: Safe Sex, mental Health and STD’s, Coming Out: Fears and Prejudice within the Black Community, Black and Lesbian and gay History, Spirituality: Religion and Rituals, positive images in the Educational system, Politics: Current affairs and Campaigning.
